The number of layoffs in the United States decreased in April.
In April, the United States announced a decrease in the number of layoffs, but due to the uncertain economic prospects brought about by tariffs, companies are still reluctant to increase hiring. Employment data company Challenger reported a 62% decrease in planned layoffs last month, to 105,441 people. However, compared to the same period last year, the number of layoffs increased by 63%, and the number of layoffs was the highest for April in the past five years. "Overall, companies are citing the economy and new technology as reasons," said Andrew Challenger, senior vice president of Challenger. "Employers are watching changes in trade, supply chains, and consumer spending, so hiring is slow and recruiting plans are limited."
