The New Zealand Meteorological Service issued a red wind warning that day, reminding residents to stay indoors and beware of various dangers brought by severe weather. Due to this, most flights in and out of Wellington by Air New Zealand have been cancelled. Air New Zealand stated that the severe weather is expected to impact all flights on May 1st. On that day, the Selwyn District in New Zealand declared a state of emergency, with local government urging residents in certain areas to evacuate.
