The US Treasury Department said it is currently considering "enhancing" its old debt repurchase program. Just a few weeks ago, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hinted that the program could be strengthened in the event of significant market turbulence. The Treasury Department said in a statement on Wednesday that it will evaluate a series of potential enhancements, such as adjusting the maximum purchase amount, repurchase operation arrangements, and frequency. Following a rare simultaneous decline in US Treasury bonds, US stocks, and the US dollar, and the largest increase in yields since 2001, Bessent said earlier this month in an interview that the Treasury Department has a "rich toolbox" to deal with emergencies. He said, "If we are willing, we can increase repurchases."
