U.S. consumer confidence drops to near five-year low, further exacerbating employment concerns.
In April, the consumer confidence index in the United States dropped to its lowest level in nearly five years, with concerns about the economy and employment intensifying due to Trump's tariff measures. Data released by the World Federation of Large Enterprises on Tuesday showed that the consumer confidence index fell by nearly 8 points to 86, the lowest since May 2020, below the Bloomberg survey economist's forecast of 88. This is also the fifth consecutive month of decline for the index, marking the longest continuous decline since 2008. Expectations for the next six months fell to their lowest level since 2011, and the current situation index also declined. The organization's data is consistent with the consumer survey trends at the University of Michigan, reflecting growing concerns among the public that high tariffs will harm the economy and employment, while driving up prices.
