The US Treasury Secretary called the digital services tax the key issue in US-EU negotiations and urged the EU to first coordinate internally.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Benet expressed that the European Union needs to resolve some "internal affairs" before entering into trade negotiations with the United States, specifically mentioning the digital services tax imposed by some countries. "We are negotiating with many different stakeholders," Benet said at a briefing at the White House on Tuesday. "Some European countries have imposed unfair digital services taxes on the United States." He pointed out that the United States has long opposed foreign digital services taxes, with successive governments believing that this tax unfairly targets American tech giants such as Amazon and Google's parent company, Alphabet Inc. Benet also specifically mentioned France and Italy.
