The Ministry of Commerce responds to questions from journalists about purchasing internationally renowned brands at low prices from so-called Chinese "contract factories" that are posted on overseas social media platforms.
On April 25, the person in charge of the E-commerce Department of the Ministry of Commerce answered questions from reporters regarding the overseas social media platform's posts about purchasing internationally renowned brands at low prices from so-called Chinese "OEM factories".
A reporter asked: Recently, there have been videos posted on American social media platforms claiming that international famous brand products can be purchased at low prices directly from the so-called Chinese "OEM factories". Many American consumers expressed their desire to purchase, but some also questioned whether it involves infringement and selling counterfeit goods. What is your comment on this?
We have noticed the relevant reports. In recent times, the unilateral imposition of tariffs on China by the United States has caused many American consumers to still flock to e-commerce platforms to purchase "Made in China" products. This fully illustrates that Chinese products are of high quality and cost-effective, "Made in China" is renowned globally, and is welcomed by consumers worldwide. Tariffs cannot change the market rules.
The Chinese government attaches great importance to the protection of intellectual property rights, and its progress and achievements in this area have been recognized by all parties. In recent years, China's market supervision departments have continuously strengthened administrative enforcement, investigating and prosecuting cases of trademark infringement and patent counterfeiting according to the law, as well as launching special enforcement actions to protect intellectual property rights and combat unfair competition on the internet, in order to better protect the legitimate rights and interests of rights holders and consumers. Meanwhile, the various levels of commerce supervisory departments have also taken active measures, implementing actions to cultivate quality e-commerce, urging major e-commerce platforms to fulfill their main responsibilities, carry out qualification access, AI+manual review, and enhance the full-process control of intellectual property rights protection.
Regarding the claim that some people can purchase internationally renowned brands at low prices from so-called "OEM factories", after consulting with relevant industry associations, it is known that Chinese brand authorization processing enterprises attach great importance to the protection of intellectual property rights. They produce and deliver according to the requirements of the order contract, and uphold the international brand image. For any illegal clues such as false marketing in the name of "OEM factories", infringement, or counterfeiting, we will promptly transfer them to the administrative enforcement departments for investigation and prosecution according to the law.
