Anthropic spends $3.4 billion to purchase power generation equipment for data centers.

Anthropic has agreed to spend $3.4 billion to procure gas generators for data centers. This is the largest known single purchase of power generation equipment by an AI lab. In late September, Anthropic took over a total of 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty generator orders from San Antonio-based equipment supplier OnePWR Solutions, but did not acquire the company. Anthropic initially planned to purchase electricity from OnePWR, then later changed course to take over OnePWR's Caterpillar generator orders. The purchase is the latest sign that AI labs are moving further into the energy industry and bypassing intermediaries as they compete for tight power equipment supplies.
