The U.S. Department of the Treasury sanctioned eight Iran-linked companies located in Canada.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury issued a notice on the 6th stating that its Office of Foreign Assets Control imposed sanctions on 8 money services businesses located in Canada in order to increase economic pressure on Iran. The Treasury accused these businesses of helping the Iranian government and sanctioned entities linked to the Iranian government transfer assets into or out of Iran. The Treasury said these businesses facilitated exchanges between the Iranian rial and other currencies and digital assets, thereby supporting Iran's participation in international trade. According to the notice, property and interests in property of these 8 businesses located in the United States, or owned or controlled by U.S. persons or entities, will be blocked. Entities in which these 8 businesses directly or indirectly hold a 50 percent or greater interest will also be blocked. Unless authorized or exempted, U.S. persons and entities are prohibited from engaging in transactions related to the sanctioned parties, and related transactions within the United States are also prohibited.
