According to US media reports, voters in dozens of counties and cities across the United States will soon have the opportunity to push for policies restricting data center development through the ballot. From Nevada to Georgia, multiple local governments in the US are letting residents decide by vote whether to tax AI infrastructure, impose regulations, or even outright ban data center construction. This could affect hundreds of billions of dollars in investment and cause trouble for major cloud computing companies such as Meta as well as data center developers like Applied Digital. A data analysis found that in the US midterm elections held on November 3, more than 40 data center-related proposals will be put to voters. As opposition to new data center construction grows increasingly loud across the country, these proposals also highlight that artificial intelligence has become an important issue in this midterm election cycle. A September poll by Quinnipiac University showed that 72% of voters oppose new data centers being built in their communities, up from 65% in a similar survey in March.
