Thailand plans to introduce buy-now-pay-later regulatory rules to curb excessive consumer borrowing.
Thailand's government plans to introduce new regulations for buy now, pay later service providers, aimed at curbing excessive borrowing and preventing consumers from taking on debt without fully assessing long-term financial risks. According to a Bank of Thailand announcement, the proposal requires digital platform operators offering BNPL services to obtain a license. The new rules set a credit limit of 20,000 baht and a maximum annual interest rate of 15%. The Bank of Thailand and the Ministry of Finance will seek public comment on the draft BNPL regulations from October 16 to November 15.
