Foreign Ministry Responds to U.S. State Department Remarks on Taiwan

On October 12, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning presided over a regular press conference. A Reuters reporter asked: Last week, the US State Department said that Chinas maritime activities off the east coast of Taiwan seriously undermine stability. Whats the Foreign Ministrys comment? Mao Ning said that China has stated its position on this multiple times. China has exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in the waters east of Taiwan. Chinas activities in these waters are entirely within Chinas sovereignty and jurisdiction. They are fully legitimate and beyond reproach. It is never China that has stirred up trouble or undermined stability in these waters. Mao Ning pointed out that the Taiwan question is Chinas internal affair and brooks no external interference. The US needs to abide by the one-China principle and the three Sino-US joint communiqus, handle the Taiwan question with prudence and uphold the larger interest of China-US relations and regional peace and stability with concrete actions.
