The Federal Reserve raised interest rates for the first time in three years, and Warsh reiterated that inflation is too high and has persisted for too long. The three major U.S. stock indexes closed lower across the board, with the Dow down 1.21%, hitting its lowest close since mid-June; the S&P 500 fell 0.44%, and the Nasdaq dropped 0.01%. Cryptocurrency-related stocks fell broadly, with Circle down more than 6%, Robinhood down more than 5%, Coinbase down more than 4%, Bitmine down more than 3%, and Strategy down more than 2%. SpaceX rose more than 5%, as Musk once again signaled that Tesla and SpaceX could merge.

According to foreign media reports, after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates, large U.S. banks increased their prime lending rates. This move will push up borrowing costs for consumers and businesses. JPMorgan Chase, KeyCorp, and Bank of New York Mellon all raised their prime lending rates from 6.75% to 7%, with the new rates effective from Thursday local time. Seema Shah, chief global strategist at U.S. asset manager Principal Asset Management, believes that "the market debate has now shifted from whether rates will rise again to how many more hikes lie ahead. The unanimous vote (at this Fed decision) shows that rising energy prices and stubborn inflation have brought even the doves on board, making a 'one-and-done' outcome highly unlikely." She added that given the market has already priced in multiple hikes, policymakers may need to raise rates at least once more to preserve credibility.

Analyst Chris Anstey said that once again on Fed day, the volatility came more from the press conference than from the FOMC statement. For today, Fed Chair Warsh's remarks seemed to only slightly amplify the tone conveyed by the latest dot plot and rate decision. Overall, the press conference leaned hawkish. Although Warsh did not provide specific forward guidance, when he said that what he and his colleagues did was remove "a dose of accommodation," that in my view means he is open to further rate hikes unless the data change. Some investors must have read it the same way, which is exactly why the two-year yield hit a more than two-year high after he began speaking.
