Inflation rate in Canada rises to 3%, Middle East conflicts continue to drive up gasoline prices.
As the conflict in the Middle East continues to drive up gasoline prices, Canadas inflation rate has risen slightly to 3%, though the increase in core price indicators remains moderate. Statistics Canada announced on Monday that gasoline prices rose by 25.7% year-on-year in July, up from 20.5% in June. Excluding gasoline, the Consumer Price Index climbed by 2.2% for the third consecutive month. The CPI increased by 0.5% month-on-month. Economists had previously expected the overall inflation rate to edge up from 2.8% in June to 2.9%. Although the overall inflation rate is slightly higher than expected, the latest data indicates that inflationary pressures are still under control, with limited signs of rising energy costs being transmitted to other sectors of the economy. The inflation rate indicator preferred by the Bank of Canada averaged 1.95%, a slight increase from the previous month, still below the 2% target. However, given other data showing the economy is rebounding, the Bank of Canada will continue to closely monitor core inflation indicators to assess whether the situation may change.
