The number of data breach notifications has far surpassed the total for last year, and the impact of artificial intelligence continues to expand.
The Identity Theft Resource Center is a nonprofit organization that assists victims of identity theft and tracks publicly disclosed data breach incidents. Its latest report shows that in the first half of 2026, various data breach incidents issued over 471 million victim notifications. The cybersecurity incident involving the education platform Canvas accounted for more than half of this total, with 275 million notifications involved. According to the ITRC report, the total number of breach notifications issued throughout 2025 was 297.5 million, which has already been surpassed in just the first half of this year. There were 1,803 security incidents in the first half of this year, an increase from 1,732 incidents during the same period in 2025. If the frequency of incidents in the second half of the year remains the same as in the first half, the total number of incidents for 2026 will exceed last year's total of 3,321.
