Rio Tinto's Australian largest aluminum smelter secures long-term electricity supply guarantee.
On August 13, Rio Tinto announced that the Tomago aluminum smelter has reached an agreement with the Australian government and the New South Wales government to secure a long-term power supply through a 10-year power purchase agreement, effective until 2038. This agreement will come into effect after the existing power contract expires on December 31, 2028, with all power sourced from renewable energy starting in 2033. Under the agreement, the Tomago aluminum smelter plans to invest AUD 1.1 billion by 2038, of which AUD 100 million will be allocated for decarbonization projects. The Tomago aluminum smelter has an annual aluminum production capacity of up to 590,000 tons, accounting for about 40% of Australia's annual production, and directly employs approximately 1,000 people. Rio Tinto holds a 51.55% stake in the joint venture.
