"To be precise, I was only unemployed for one second." At an event at Stanford University, Jeff Dean, who just bid farewell to his nearly 27-year career at Google, humorously reflected on his transition from a senior executive at a tech giant to an entrepreneur, about 12 and a half hours after he left the company. This was his first public appearance since announcing his departure from Google. Prior to this, he had announced the co-founding of an AI company, Discovery Loop, along with Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le. A nearly unavoidable question was posed to Jeff Dean: What is something you can do after leaving Google that you couldn't do while at Google? He did not criticize his former employer but instead spoke about "focus." In his view, one advantage of a small company is that everyone can work toward the same goal, concentrating on one thing without the distractions and other matters that come with a large organization. Another change that makes today's AI entrepreneurship different from the past is cloud computing. In the past, only tech giants like Google had the computational infrastructure needed to support large-scale machine learning research; now, a small but well-funded team can acquire significant computing power through cloud services. The combination of "small teams + large computing power" is also a crucial logic behind the founding of Discovery Loop.
