Berkshire spent approximately $4.5 billion on stock buybacks in the second quarter and purchased nearly $20 billion in shares during the period, indicating that CEO Abel is increasingly investing the company's substantial cash reserves into the market. Berkshire began buying back stock in the first quarter for the first time in more than a year. Abel stated earlier this year that the company's resumption of buybacks was due to management's belief that the stock's "intrinsic value" was higher than its market price. CFRA Research analyst Cathy Seifert noted, "Investors will be encouraged by the buyback initiatives. This is also a way for Greg to assert his dominance as he takes over the company." This stock buyback has provided shareholders with the largest quarterly capital return since 2021. Berkshire's cash reserves fell to $365.5 billion in the second quarter, down from approximately $397 billion in the previous quarter.
