South Korea's inflation cooling exceeds expectations, but it is unlikely to change the central bank's tightening stance.

South Korea's consumer inflation in July slowed more than expected, falling below 3%, which has eased concerns for policymakers. The previous month, the price increase had accelerated to the highest level since the end of 2023. The Korea Statistics Agency announced on Tuesday that the consumer price index in July rose by 2.8% year-on-year, the lowest increase since April, down from 3.2% in June. Although the latest data may alleviate concerns about a renewed acceleration in inflation, the figures remain well above the Bank of Korea's target, making a shift in policy outlook unlikely. Officials have consistently stated that, given the firmness of consumer prices, strong economic growth, and high housing prices, it is necessary to maintain a tightening stance.
