The Liberal Democratic Party of Japan plans to push for a substantial zeroing out of the food consumption tax, despite concerns over financial sources.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) of Japan is set to advance plans to pause the collection of consumption tax on food, despite opposition from a former prime minister and other officials concerned about the funding sources for the tax reduction measures. On Monday, after a meeting with party lawmakers, the chair of the LDP's tax system survey committee, Goto Onodera, stated, "Many people are currently under pressure from rising living costs. We intend to design a system that will effectively reduce the consumption tax rate to zero, as promised during the election period." Some LDP members have expressed clear opposition to this plan, citing concerns about Japan's fiscal situation. Shigeyuki Goto, a senior LDP lawmaker who chaired the meeting, indicated that among the attending lawmakers, 65 voiced support, 9 opposed it, and 1 held a neutral stance. However, the dissent within the party is unlikely to prevent the tax reduction plan from moving forward.
