Disney's remake of "The Little Mermaid" suffers a box office disaster.
Last weekend, the live-action version of this popular Disney animation suffered a box office rout, with a global estimated revenue of only $95 million. Considering the film's production cost of around $250 million, this opening performance can be considered dismal. The film's domestic premiere box office in the United States was $43 million. Despite Disney claiming it was a "good start," this performance is almost on par with last year's lackluster box office performance of "Snow White," ranking among the lowest in all of Disney's classic animated remakes. Despite harsh criticism from film critics, data from market research company CinemaScore shows that the audience gave it an average rating of A- on premiere night.
