The EU plans to introduce a ban on social media for minors.
On July 2nd, the website "European Dynamics" cited several EU officials as disclosing that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen plans to announce a plan to ban minors from using social media across the EU during her annual "State of the Union" address to the European Parliament on September 16th. A youth online safety research advisory group is expected to submit a relevant report on the 13th of this month to provide recommendations to the European Commission. It is reported that it is still unclear at what age threshold the European Commission will set for using social media, and how this plan will be implemented. Currently, EU member states have proposed different approaches on how to enforce the social media ban, including completely restricting minors under a certain age from using social media platforms, or requiring minors to first obtain parental consent. This plan will pave the way for the EU to legislate or take other measures to restrict minors from using social media.
