OpenAI partners with Broadcom to launch the first custom chip.
OpenAI and Broadcom jointly released their first custom chip, codenamed "Jalapeo," on Wednesday, marking OpenAI's official entry into the field of artificial intelligence chips. The chip will be manufactured by Broadcom and used for OpenAI's inference tasks. This is an important step in OpenAI's "building the complete technical stack behind models and products" plan. OpenAI President Greg Brockman stated in a declaration, "By designing more of the technical stack ourselves, we can provide more intelligent services more efficiently, and continue to drive advanced AI to a broader audience." The chip is referred to as the Intelligence Processor by both parties, and is described as the first "AI accelerator" on the platform being developed, aiming to "make advanced AI faster, more reliable, and accessible to more people." Physical samples of the chip will be delivered to OpenAI on Wednesday. Both parties aim to achieve initial deployment of the Jalapeo chip by the end of 2026, and gradually scale up over the next few years.
