Sweden is rebuilding a reactor after more than 40 years, ushering in a revival for Nordic nuclear power.
Sweden's largest electricity company, Vattenfall Group, recently announced that it has selected the British company Rolls-Royce to build three small modular reactors in southwest Sweden, marking the country's return to building nuclear reactors after more than 40 years. Since deciding to gradually phase out nuclear power in 1980, Sweden has shut down half of its existing 12 nuclear reactors, but the current government is encouraging the development of nuclear power once again. In recent years, including Sweden, the Nordic countries have faced challenges in their energy supply chains, leading to a resurgence in nuclear power development in pursuit of stable and clean sources of electricity.
