The First Quantum Panama copper mine has been identified as generally compliant.
After receiving a long-awaited audit report, Panama has taken another step in deciding whether to reopen a giant copper mine operated by First Quantum Minerals. The audit found that the project has largely complied with its environmental, legal, financial, and operational obligations. According to a statement released by the Panamanian government on Friday, the audit conducted by Swiss company SGS SA identified areas for improvement such as administrative procedures, biodiversity management, and ecological restoration. However, auditors stated that these shortcomings do not constitute structural deficiencies that would undermine the overall conclusions.
