According to court documents filed on Friday, Luigi Mangione, who is accused of shooting a high-ranking executive of a health insurance company on a Manhattan sidewalk, has now withdrawn his defense plan claiming he was in an extreme mental health crisis at the time of the alleged murder. The 28-year-old Mangione is accused of shooting Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare, outside a hotel in Midtown in December 2024. This brazen murder, while widely condemned by government officials, has also become a symbol of frustration among Americans over rising healthcare costs and practices in the health insurance industry. In December 2024, Mangione pleaded not guilty to state charges of murder, illegal possession of a weapon, and forgery brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. His trial is set for September in Manhattan presided over by Judge Gregory Caro. In a letter to Judge Caro on Friday, Mangione's lawyers stated that they are currently withdrawing their plan to argue in court that Mangione was unable to control his actions due to extreme mental health crisis. Mangione's legal team declined to comment on Friday.
