For a long time, people have been suspicious that artificial food coloring is harmful to health. But the latest research shows that some natural color additives used as alternatives are associated with increased risks of type 2 diabetes and cancer. A study published this week by French researchers found that certain natural colors were linked to a more than 40% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer. Scientists from multiple universities and research institutions in France investigated the diets of over 100,000 people, including specific brands, and tracked them for an average of eight years. The Trump administration is pushing for American food giants to use natural food coloring, believing them to be safer alternatives to artificial colors. This is a central goal of Health Minister Robert Kennedy and his "Make America Healthy Again" movement. Large food companies are also switching to natural colors due to consumer preferences. However, research conducted by French universities and research institutions suggests that both synthetic and natural colors are associated with health issues. "Natural food additives do not guarantee safety for consumers," said Matilde Tuvier, the lead author of the above study and the research director at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research.
