The Director of the White House National Economic Council stated that there will not be a new bureaucratic organization established to regulate AI products.
Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council, stated that the Trump administration is still developing a regulatory plan for cutting-edge AI models, but does not intend to establish a large new institution for this purpose. Hassett said in an interview with CNBC on Monday, "No one in the White House believes that we should create a large new bureaucratic institution to approve AI." Hassett stated that U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, National Cybersecurity Director Sean Cairncross, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Welsh are coordinating the government's related strategies. Officials are working with the private sector, "to ensure that these models will not cause significant harm before they are released to the public." Last week, it was reported that a draft executive order from Donald Trump may reform existing cybersecurity information sharing programs, including AI companies, and address threats posed by emerging technologies.
