The governor of Mexico temporarily resigned to cooperate with the investigation by the US authorities.
On May 1, the governor of Sinaloa state in Mexico, Ruben Rocha Moya, applied for temporary leave to cooperate with an investigation by the Mexican Federal Attorney General's Office. Previously, the US Department of Justice had filed charges against 10 current and former Mexican officials, including Rocha Moya. Rocha Moya stated on social media on May 1 that he had submitted a temporary leave application to the state legislature after the Federal Attorney General's Office announced it would initiate an investigation in Sinaloa state. The US accusations against him are "false and malicious." Earlier, Mexican President Sinbaum responded to the US extradition request for the 10 Mexican citizens, calling for national unity and sovereignty to be upheld. She stated that any procedures, including extradition requests, must strictly comply with Mexican law and existing international treaties. The Federal Attorney General's Office of Mexico will assess the case. The US Department of Justice on April 29 charged 10 current and former Mexican officials, including Rocha Moya, with collaborating with the Sinaloa drug cartel, assisting in the flow of drugs into the United States, and involving crimes such as weapons offenses and kidnapping.
