Protests sparked again over US military aircraft conducting training exercises for takeoff and landing on land in Japan.
On April 30th, local time, the US Navy stationed in Japan announced that they will conduct carrier-based aircraft landing and takeoff training on Iwo Jima from May 7th to 17th. If the training cannot be carried out locally due to weather or other reasons, it may be conducted from May 12th to 17th at four US military bases in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Yamaguchi Prefecture and Iwakuni City immediately protested. They requested in writing that the training be limited to Iwo Jima and urged that Iwakuni Base not be considered as an alternative facility in the future. They also verbally requested that the training for carrier-based aircraft landing certification after the training be completed in the waters near Iwo Jima to prevent the aircraft from returning to Iwakuni Base. Local residents representatives stated that the loud noise from US military planes is unbearable for children and patients. They hope that this situation will not happen again, but the future is still uncertain and concerning.
