The South African wine industry welcomes China's zero-tariff measures.
The South African Wine Association and the South African Wine Industry Association issued a press release on April 30th welcoming China's decision to implement zero tariffs on all African countries with diplomatic relations from May 1, 2026. They believe that this move provides "crucial opportunities" for the South African wine industry. The press release states that the zero tariff measure will significantly enhance the price competitiveness of South African wine, provide important opportunities for elevating the brand status of South African wine in the Chinese market, and is expected to increase the value positioning of South African wine in the short term, with exports expected to recover. In the long run, opportunities will not only be limited to sales growth, but will also include driving product premiumization, strengthening brand positioning, and establishing deeper strategic partnerships with Chinese distributors and e-commerce platforms.
