The US Department of Justice refuses to assist France in investigating Musk's X company.
After the Paris office of social media platform X was raided earlier this year, the US Department of Justice has informed French law enforcement that they will not assist in the investigation of Elon Musk's X company. In a two-page letter sent on Friday by the Department of Justice's Office of International Affairs, the French were accused of improperly using their judicial system to interfere with an American company. The letter, which was reviewed by the media, stated: "This investigation attempts to use the French criminal legal system in a manner that violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, to regulate a public square for the free expression of ideas and opinions." The letter also stated that the French request for US assistance was "an attempt to involve the United States in politically charged criminal litigation, aimed at inappropriately regulating the business activities of a social media platform." The US Department of Justice confirmed sending the letter, which was addressed to an international cooperation office within the French Ministry of Justice. The Paris prosecutor's office, responsible for the investigation, stated that they were not aware of the letter. The office added that the French Constitution guarantees their judicial independence, and French prosecutors have sole authority over criminal investigations.
