On April 12th local time, the Republic of Benin held presidential elections, with nearly 8 million registered voters going to polling stations to elect a new president. The main competition in this Benin presidential election is between two presidential candidates. Incumbent Minister of Economy, Finance, and Economic Cooperation Romuald Wadagni is running for the Union Progress and Renewal Party, while his main opponent is Paul Hounkp, leader of the Benin Renaissance Shell Party. According to the arrangements made by the Benin Independent Electoral Commission, voting began at 7am local time on the 12th and ended at 6pm that afternoon. Preliminary results are expected to be announced on the 14th. If no one receives more than half of the votes in the first round, a second round of voting will be held in May.
