On the 26th local time, the United Nations confirmed that the Maldives had withdrawn the nomination of Frivia Gamba as a candidate for Secretary-General of the United Nations. The spokesperson for the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations stated at a press briefing that the Maldives Permanent Mission to the United Nations had sent a letter to the President of the General Assembly and the President of the Security Council, deciding to withdraw the nomination of Gamba. The President of the General Assembly will handle the notification in accordance with relevant General Assembly resolutions and convey it to all member states. The spokesperson for the General Assembly also confirmed that Chile had withdrawn the nomination of former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, but because Brazil and Mexico, who nominated her jointly, had not withdrawn their nominations, Bachelet still retains her status as a candidate. In addition to Bachelet, there are currently three other candidates openly running for the position of the next Secretary-General of the United Nations: Rafael Grossi nominated by Argentina and currently the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, economist and former Vice President of Costa Rica Rebeca Grynspan nominated by Costa Rica, and former President of Senegal Macky Sall nominated by Burundi.
