Musk: "Terafab" project will be located in Austin and jointly operated by Tesla and SpaceX.
On March 21 local time, Musk held a press conference on the "Terafab" project, announcing that this ambitious plan to eventually produce its own chips for robots, artificial intelligence, and space data centers will be located in Austin and jointly operated by Tesla and SpaceX. Musk stated that he will first establish an "advanced technology wafer factory" in Austin, equipped with the full set of equipment needed to manufacture and test various chips. Musk also mentioned that despite the semiconductor industry increasing production, the pace of development is still not able to meet his anticipated chip demands. "This pace is much slower than we think," Musk said. "Either we build 'Teraflop-level factories,' or we will not have chips available, and we need these chips, so we have to build 'Teraflop-level factories'." Musk's project aims to support 1 teraflop of computational power every year in the future.
