Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated at a press conference that the European Commission will propose that member states reduce electricity-related taxes and provide subsidies for electricity prices in order to quickly alleviate the energy price shocks caused by US military actions against Iran. She said, "In some cases, the tax burden on electricity is far higher than natural gas, reaching up to 15 times. This situation cannot continue. We will propose lowering electricity tax rates and ensuring that the tax burden on electricity is lower than fossil fuels." She added, "Member states can now use national aid measures to compensate for the increase in energy costs, and we will further relax the rules related to national aid." Von der Leyen also stated that she has proposed to national leaders to provide funding support for the industrial sector through investments, helping companies reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.
