California establishes Artificial Intelligence Oversight Department to advance xAI investigation.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in an interview with the media on Tuesday that his office is establishing an artificial intelligence accountability program and is also investigating the issue of xAI, created by Elon Musk, generating sexually explicit images without consent. Bonta said that the California Attorney General's office took swift action last month, issuing a cease and desist order to the xAI company as global regulators are investigating the adult and potentially underage sexualized content produced by the company's artificial intelligence chatbot Grok. Bonta said that his office is seeking confirmation that this behavior has stopped and is still in discussions with the company. He said that the xAI company is deflecting responsibility and still allowing the generation of some sexualized content for paying users. Bonta added, "Stopping in your tracks does not mean you are absolved of your actions." xAI, recently acquired by Musk's SpaceX, did not respond to requests for comment.
