Preliminary results show that Seguro is leading in the second round of voting in the Portuguese presidential election.
On February 8th, local time, the second round of voting for the new Portuguese president ended. According to the preliminary vote count released by the Portuguese Ministry of Internal Affairs at 8:00 p.m., center-left Socialist Party candidate Antnio Seguro leads with 62.97% of the vote, ahead of far-right party "That's Enough" leader Andr Ventura with 37.03% of the vote, and Seguro is expected to win the election. This is the first time in nearly 40 years that Portugal's presidential election has entered the second round of voting. According to the Portuguese constitution, the president is elected directly by the people, and the candidate who receives a simple majority in the second round of voting is elected. The newly elected president's term is 5 years and they can be re-elected once. The second term of current president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will end on March 9th, and the new president is expected to be sworn in on the same day. This vote took place under the influence of consecutive stormy weather. Some disaster-affected municipalities postponed voting according to the law, but it is not expected to affect the confirmation of the national election results.
