South African Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago warned about the risks associated with the rising popularity of stablecoins, stating that such cryptocurrencies pose a risk of "fragmentation/collapse". He emphasized that central banks have a responsibility to protect the "unity of currency" and the affordability of currency for the public. Central banks need to "protect the unity of currency and the affordability of currency for the public...the reality is, these things could fragment."
