South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp mistakenly sent 620,000 bitcoins to users.
South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp announced on Saturday that it has successfully recovered almost all of the approximately 620,000 bitcoins mistakenly sent to users, an incident that had briefly dragged down the price of bitcoin on the platform. The company mistakenly sent 620,000 bitcoins to 249 users in a promotional event around 7 p.m. local time on Friday, with each user receiving an average of 2,490 bitcoins worth 2.44 trillion Korean won. The exchange suspended trading and withdrawals on user accounts at around 7:40 p.m. that same evening. Bitstamp stated that it has immediately recovered 618,212 bitcoins and 93% of the 1,788 bitcoins sold by users. As of now, the company has still been unable to recover 125 bitcoins.
