The UK is considering banning Australian-style children's social media laws.
The British government said on Monday that it is considering a series of measures to better protect children online, including implementing measures similar to Australia's ban on children under a certain age using social media, as well as providing stricter guidance to schools on using mobile phones. The government stated that it will review a range of proposed solutions and examine evidence from around the world, including research on the effectiveness of banning children from using social media and how best to enforce such a ban if introduced. Australia became the first country last month to ban children under 16 from using social media, and ministers will visit Australia to learn from their approach. The government did not mention specific age restrictions, but indicated that they are exploring the implementation of a ban on children under a certain age, as well as taking other measures such as strengthening age verification and researching if the current digital consent age is too low.
