A passenger train collided with a herd of wild elephants in the northeastern state of Assam in India on the 20th local time, causing multiple carriages to derail. There were no casualties among the passengers, but 8 wild elephants were killed or injured. The spokesperson for the Indian Railways, Sharma, said that on the day of the incident, around 100 wild Asian elephants were crossing the railway tracks. The train driver noticed the herd of elephants and applied emergency brakes, but still collided with some of the elephants. The locomotive and 5 carriages derailed, fortunately without any passenger casualties, but 7 elephants were killed and 1 young elephant was injured. Veterinarians have conducted autopsies on the deceased elephants, and they will be buried later that day.
