President Trump proposed a significant cut to passenger car fuel economy standards. Trump stated in the Oval Office, "We are officially terminating Biden's ridiculous, onerous, and frankly very bad Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, which impose expensive restrictions." He was joined by the CEOs of Ford and Stellantis. The CAFE standards, which began in 1975, have been tightening over the years aimed at improving the fuel efficiency of vehicles. The Biden administration had previously called for automakers to increase the average fuel efficiency of passenger cars and light trucks to about 50 miles per gallon by 2031 in order to promote the production and sale of electric vehicles in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the new standards proposed by the Trump administration would only require a fuel efficiency of about 34 miles per gallon by 2031.
