Jared Isaacman, the director of NASA, recently announced that NASA astronauts will soon be allowed to bring "the latest smartphones" on their flights, starting with the upcoming SpaceX Crew-12 and Artemis II missions in the next few months. A spokesperson for Apple stated in an email that this will mark the first time the iPhone has received comprehensive certification for long-term use in orbit and beyond. Previously, NASA astronauts were not allowed to bring personal smartphones on space missions but were allowed to bring some approved digital cameras and other devices. Isaacman stated that with smartphones, astronauts will be able to "capture special moments for their families and share inspiring images and videos with the world" (MacRumors).
