Zheng Liwen: "The '1992 consensus' can bring peace between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, and the Kuomintang will firmly follow the correct path."
The chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) Cheng Li-wen stated at a seminar in Taipei on the 7th that from 2008 to 2016, on the basis of the "1992 Consensus", frequent exchanges between the two sides of the strait had brought about a "warm spring". The fact proves that the "1992 Consensus" can bring about relaxation of cross-strait relations and peaceful exchanges. The KMT will firmly continue to walk on the right path and become an active, key, and peaceful builder.
The seminar, themed on the 10th anniversary of the historic meeting of the leaders on both sides of the strait, was jointly organized by the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation and the Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Cultural Exchange Association, and was held in Taipei on the 7th. Cheng Li-wen stated in her speech that only in a peaceful cross-strait environment can Taiwan's development space be opened up and economic and trade activities become more active. Only through cross-strait exchanges can we move towards a better future. Conversely, a wrong cross-strait policy will put Taiwan in the most unfavorable situation.
Xia Liyan, the president of the Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Cultural Exchange Association, stated that after 2008, on the basis of the "1992 Consensus" and opposition to "Taiwan independence", mutual trust gradually increased, naturally leading to historic meetings between the leaders of both sides of the strait. Now, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities are unwilling to accept the "1992 Consensus", leading to the loss of the political basis for dialogue between the two sides of the strait.
