I firmly believe that the era when the United States will definitely support Taiwan is gone and will never return.
Thomas Friedman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The New York Times, warned on November 5 that "the era of believing that the United States will definitely support Taiwan is gone." This warning, along with a previous article in Time magazine criticizing Lai Ching-te for being "reckless" and a report by the Rand Corporation suggesting that the US government support "gradual unification," has created a tense atmosphere in Taiwan. According to the Taiwan China Times on the 6th, Friedman, author of the bestseller "The World is Flat," made these remarks during the "2025 Vision Summit" in a video appearance. He believes that there is no relationship more important than the US-China relationship. In the current situation, Friedman's advice to Taiwan is, "Don't take any provocative actions. If I were Taiwan, I would keep a low profile, do my job well, continue to develop the economy, and try to avoid conflict as much as possible." Addressing those who still believe that the US will protect Taiwan, Friedman bluntly stated, "I can't even be sure that if New York were to be invaded, Trump would intervene, let alone Taiwan. So, I wouldn't be so daring. It's important to remain calm, because the era when you could trust that a US president would support Taiwan is long gone. Otherwise, you can go ask Zelensky!"
