The National Bureau of Statistics released CPI data on March 9th. In February 2024, the national consumer price index rose by 0.7% year-on-year. Among them, urban prices rose by 0.8%, rural prices rose by 0.5%; food prices fell by 0.9%, non-food prices rose by 1.1%; consumer goods prices fell by 0.1%, service prices rose by 1.9%. On average for January and February, the national consumer price index remained unchanged from the same period last year.
In February, the national consumer price index rose by 1.0% month-on-month. Among them, urban prices rose by 1.1%, rural prices rose by 0.9%; food prices rose by 3.3%, non-food prices rose by 0.5%; consumer goods prices rose by 1.1%, service prices rose by 1.0%.
I. Changes in various types of goods and services prices year-on-year
In February, the prices of food, tobacco and alcohol decreased by 0.1% year-on-year, affecting the CPI (consumer price index) to decrease by about 0.03 percentage points. Among food items, egg prices decreased by 5.1%, affecting the CPI to decrease by about 0.03 percentage points; fresh fruit prices fell by 4.1%, affecting the CPI to decrease by about 0.09 percentage points; meat prices fell by 2.9%, affecting the CPI to decrease by about 0.09 percentage points; aquatic product prices rose by 4.1%, affecting the CPI to rise by about 0.08 percentage points; fresh vegetable prices rose by 2.9%, affecting the CPI to rise by about 0.07 percentage points; grain prices rose by 0.3%, affecting the CPI to rise by about 0.01 percentage points.
The prices of the other seven categories rose year-on-year except for one category. Among them, education, culture and entertainment, other goods and services, and clothing prices rose by 3.9%, 3.0%, and 1.6% respectively, while healthcare, household goods and services, and housing prices rose by 1.5%, 0.5%, and 0.2% respectively; transportation and communication prices fell by 0.4%.
II. Changes in various types of goods and services prices month-on-month
In February, the prices of food, tobacco and alcohol rose by 2.2% month-on-month, affecting the CPI to rise by about 0.63 percentage points. Among food items, fresh vegetable prices rose by 12.7%, affecting the CPI to rise by about 0.28 percentage points; aquatic product prices rose by 6.2%, affecting the CPI to rise by about 0.12 percentage points; fresh fruit prices rose by 4.3%, affecting the CPI to rise by about 0.09 percentage points; meat prices rose by 3.4%, affecting the CPI to rise by about 0.10 percentage points, with pork prices rising by 7.2%, affecting the CPI to rise by about 0.09 percentage points; egg prices fell by 2.2%, affecting the CPI to fall by about 0.01 percentage points.
The prices of the other seven categories rose in three categories, remained flat in one, and fell in three categories month-on-month. Among them, education, culture and entertainment, transportation and communication, and healthcare prices rose by 1.7%, 1.6%, and 0.4% respectively; housing prices remained flat; household goods and services, clothing, and other goods and services prices fell by 0.5%, 0.2%, and 0.2% respectively.
