According to the latest research from the Sensor Semiconductor Channel of TechInsights, the market size of smartphone image sensors is expected to slightly increase in 2023, with total revenue exceeding $14 billion. The research report points out that slow demand and high CIS inventory have restricted the recovery in the first half of 2023. However, with inventory normalization and increase in customer seasonal demand, the market is expected to show strong performance by the end of 2023.
One of the main highlights of the image sensor market is the strong demand for new high-end large-format and high-resolution CIS products in the high-end and ultra-high-end smartphone market. TechInsights' research on smartphone CIS models also indicates that the demand for small pixel pitch products remains high, especially in multi-camera applications.
In terms of rankings, Sony Semiconductor achieved record revenue and topped the list; followed by Samsung System LSI and OmniVision.
In 2023, Sony established a strong leadership position in the image sensor market, with over 55% revenue share. The supplier benefited from the demand for high-end smartphones, allowing it to dominate the CIS supply chain with its premium large-format CIS product portfolio. Sony's CIS product portfolio has significantly improved with the introduction of dual-layer transistor pixel moving CIS products in top-tier smartphone customer devices.
Due to inventory adjustments by major customers, Samsung System LSI was affected by the decline in demand for its bulk CIS products, but the supplier dominated the shipment of high-resolution CIS products, including 50MP and 200MP, during this period.
TechInsights noted that the weak performance of Chinese smartphone OEMs impacted the CIS orders of OmniVision and GalaxyCore Inc. However, in the second half of 2023, OmniVision made significant progress with a series of design wins for its high-resolution 50MP CIS products.
TechInsights pointed out that the demand for 50MP CIS products is approaching saturation. SK Hynix will continue to increase its supply of 50MP CIS products. In addition to OmniVision, SitWe will become another 50MP CIS supplier for Chinese smartphone OEMs. GalaxyCore Inc. dominates in low-pixel product supply and is now beginning to offer high-resolution CIS products.
