BMO pointed out that Google's entry into the user-generated content gaming space could pose competitive pressure on Roblox, and stated that this new platform may compete more directly with Roblox than with traditional game publishers.
BMO raises a cautious signal on Roblox (RBLX.US): Alphabet Inc. Class C enters the user-generated gaming arena, "dimensional strike" rewrites the competitive narrative. In a latest research report, BMO Capital Markets analyst Stan Velikov positioned Alphabet Inc. Class C's (GOOGL.US) newly launched experimental game creation platform Playground as the most direct competitive threat facing Roblox (RBLX.US), rather than a challenge to traditional game publishers such as Take-Two Interactive Software (TTWO.US). This judgment from the bank marks that Wall Street is repricing the competitive landscape of the user-generated content (UGC) gaming trackcompetition no longer comes from horizontal rivalry among similar UGC platforms, but from tech giants leveraging AI capabilities in a "dimensional strike." On the day Alphabet Inc. Class C launched Playground, Roblox shares plunged at one point. Although the stock has gradually recovered from its year-to-date low, as of Tuesday's close, its share price had fallen sharply by 60% from its 2025 high. Alphabet Inc. Class C Playground: AI redefines the "zero-threshold moment" of game creation It is understood that on October 7, Google Labs, Alphabet Inc. Class C's experimental projects division, officially launched the Playground platform. Users do not need to master programming, game design, or art production skills; they can simply describe in natural language and let AI generate 2D or 3D games that can run directly in a browser. Users can choose game types such as quiz and racing, or start from a blank project, and then continuously modify game mechanics, physics, characters, and visual style through text instructions. The technical foundation of Playground brings together Alphabet Inc. Class C's Gemini, the image model Nano Banana, and the music model Lyria, integrating language processing, image generation, and music creation capabilities into a unified game creation workflow through a customized AI orchestration system. After generation is complete, the game can run directly in a browser, supporting mobile phones and computers, with no need for users to install a client or configure a development environment. The platform also offers features similar to a gaming community; publicly released games can join leaderboards, and creators can continue to iterate and improve their works after release. More strategically significant is Alphabet Inc. Class C's simultaneous collaboration with Unity (U.US). The two parties announced a strategic partnership, under which Unity will integrate Spark technology into Playground later this year, providing professional-grade game mechanics, high-fidelity 3D graphics, and Unity runtime capabilities. This means Playground's positioning may evolve from an experimental platform for quickly generating simple games further toward a complete game development toolusers first rapidly build prototypes through natural language, then use Unity technology to refine the content. Playground is currently open only to users aged 18 and above in the United States, adopting a model of issuing AI generation tokens weekly. Free users have a limited quota, while Google One AI subscribers have a higher quota. Player feedback on the first batch of launched works is polarized; the actual performance of some works shows an obvious gap from promotional expectations, indicating that AI still has limitations in handling complex game mechanics. Roblox's mirror and contrast: the pioneer's dilemma of the Build tool It is worth noting that Roblox is not a latecomer on the path of using AI to lower the creation threshold. In July this year, Roblox launched the AI creation tool Build on mobile, allowing users to generate basic games through text prompts, driven by multiple AI models and covering content such as gameplay mechanics, environments, characters, visual style, and sound effects. At the RDC 2026 developers conference in September, Roblox further announced that Build would expand to desktop and planned to allow creators to publish their works as standalone apps to mobile, PC, and game consoles, supporting players to enter games directly through web links. The significance of this strategic adjustment is that Roblox is shifting from "bringing more people to the Roblox platform" to "letting creative content on Roblox reach more places." AI lowers the production threshold, while cross-platform publishing expands the potential audiencethe combination of the two may change Roblox's future business model and platform boundaries. However, although BMO analyst Stan Velikov said he was "impressed" by the launch of Playground, he also pointed out a key historical pattern: "Big tech companies have historically struggled to break into gaming." This judgment reminds investors that Alphabet Inc. Class C's previous attempt in cloud gaming was not successfulthe Stadia cloud gaming service was announced to close in 2022, officially ceased operations in January 2023, and refunded players. Playground has chosen a path different from Stadia: it does not rely on expensive game licensing and streaming transmission, but instead lets users fill the content shelves themselves. But the threat of Alphabet Inc. Class C's entry this time lies in the fact that its competitive logic is completely different from before. Unity CEO Matt Bromberg once gave a widely cited analogy when talking about AI game creation: letting AI reproduce a game that has already been made will not make you become renowned Japanese game creator Hideo Kojima, just as typing the first paragraph of War and Peace into a word processor will not make you Tolstoy. This implies that Playground's goal is not to replace professional game development, but to open up an entirely new class of creatorsthose who are creative but lack technical ability. Roblox's deep anxiety: declining monetization rate and reliance on hit titles BMO's cautious attitude toward Roblox is rooted in the significant deterioration its fundamentals are undergoing. In the second quarter of 2026, Roblox achieved revenue of $1.5 billion, up 36% year over year, with operating cash flow and free cash flow increasing 60% and 66% year over year respectively, and a free cash flow margin of about 20%. However, bookings grew only 8% year over year, at the low end of the guidance range, mainly dragged down by a decline in hourly monetization rate. The deeper problem is that Roblox guided for the first time that bookings would decline year over yearthe first time in the company's history. BMO analyst Brian Pitz pointed out in a July downgrade report that user engagement shifted from high-monetization hit games in 2025 to newer games and evergreen game portfolios with lower hourly monetization capacity, and the magnitude of this shift exceeded expectations. The midpoint of third-quarter guidance was 12.5% below market expectations. Roblox Chief Financial Officer Naveen Chopra's explanation on the earnings call revealed the structural dilemma of the UGC platform: "We attribute this unforeseen monetization gap to user engagement shifting from high-monetization hit games in 2025 to newer games and evergreen game portfolios with lower hourly monetization capacity." Looking back to the summer of 2025, Roblox was at a high point. "Grow a Garden" set a record of more than 22.3 million concurrent players, breaking the previous record of 15.3 million held by "Fortnite." Well-known analyst Matthew Ball pointed out in his "State of Video Gaming" report that in the 2025 global gaming market outside China, Roblox alone captured 67% of the entire industry's net growth. However, the popularity of these phenomenon-level games has faded sharplythe concurrent online player count of "Steal a Brainrot" fell from more than 25 million to about 110,000. BMO expects that "user engagement and monetization pressure will persist over the next several quarters, especially in the fourth quarter of 2026 when GTA VI is released." Deutsche Bank Aktiengesellschaft analyst Benjamin Black also downgraded Roblox to "Hold," cutting the target price from $56 to $38, noting that the quarter "materially reduced near-term visibility" and expecting the stock price to "remain range-bound until monetization stabilizes in UCAN regions." A multidimensional perspective on the competitive landscape: more than just Alphabet Inc. Class C Alphabet Inc. Class C Playground's entry is not an isolated event, but a microcosm of the intensive explosion of the AI game creation platform track in the second half of 2026. Within just two months, at least three giants brought "AI making games" to the fore. At Meta's (META.US) Connect 2026 conference held at the end of September, the tech giant released two AI gaming tools, Horizon Create and Horizon Studio, targeting mobile and browser respectively, allowing users to build 2D and 3D games directly on their phones through natural language prompts. Meta's differentiation lies in its social distribution capabilitygames can be tried directly in Instagram or Facebook feeds, and publishing to social platforms takes only two clicks. More noteworthy is that Meta's engine supports real-time collaborative creation, with multiple users able to edit and test in the same game world simultaneously. In June, Epic announced at Unreal Fest that it would integrate large models such as Claude and Gemini into Unreal Engine 6 through the MCP protocol. In addition, AI-native startup Astrocade completed a $56 million Series B round in Maythe largest financing to date in the consumer-facing AI gaming platform sectorwith 5 million monthly active users and 75,000 creators. From a macro perspective, the creator economy of the UGC gaming ecosystem is expanding rapidly. According to industry reports, in the UGC ecosystem represented by Roblox, Fortnite, and Overwolf, the total scale of creator payouts reached about $2.2 billion in 2025, up 47% year over year. Data disclosed by Roblox itself shows that in the 12 months ended June 30, 2026, creator revenue paid through the Developer Exchange program increased about 50% year over year, with cumulative payments exceeding $5 billion. However, median income is only about $1,500, and the gap between the top and ordinary participants is extremely widethe top 10 highest-earning creators received an average of $65.7 million, while the top 100 averaged $10.8 million. This extremely polarized structure means that although AI lowering the creation threshold may expand the creator base, whether it can truly incremental platform revenue still depends on whether these new creators can produce content with sustained appeal. Nearly 4% of global gaming revenue currently flows through Roblox's platform, and CEO David Baszucki has set a goal of capturing 10% of the global gaming market. Against the backdrop of a global gaming market worth about $200 billion annually, the O18 user group accounts for about 80% of total spending, which is precisely the direction Roblox is actively expandingU.S. O18 users account for about one-third of verified DAUs, and their monetization rate is more than 50% higher than that of U18 users. Moat and soft underbelly: Roblox's offense and defense Facing aggressive tech giants, Roblox is not without barriers. Its core advantage lies in the creator ecosystem and network effects accumulated over more than a decade. The platform has more than 120 million daily active users, more than 29 billion hours of user time, and age verification penetration has risen to 57%. The Developer Exchange program has paid creators more than $5 billion cumulatively, forming one of the world's largest UGC gaming economies. Roblox is further consolidating this moat through AI tools. The company acquired Morpheus AI, which pioneered Self Forcing and pixel latent world models, transforming slow offline video models into fast, interactive real-time generation engines, enhancing the company's ability to realize Roblox Realitya foundational multi-year bet. On the content distribution side, Roblox also plans to support opening game links directly in browsers by the end of the year, so users may not necessarily need to open the Roblox client first. But Roblox's soft underbelly is equally obvious. Its GAAP net loss in the second quarter of 2026 was $183 million, or $1.42 per share, and the company remains in a state of sustained losses. Its current price-to-sales ratio is about 6.25 times, significantly below its historical median of 10.24 times, indicating that the market is pricing in more modest future growth expectations. Continued insider selling has also drawn market attentionover the past 12 months, total insider sales reached $105.6 million, with no insider purchases recorded.
