On Monday, Boeing Company (BA.US) fell 5% to $188.14. On the news front, according to reports, Boeing Company stated that a software fault exists in some 737 MAX aircraft, which could cause the automatic navigation system to fail during landing. The issue has drawn attention from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The report said this previously undisclosed software fault stems from a cockpit software update and could increase the workload on pilots, especially during low-altitude flights and in complex situations such as severe weather. Boeing Company notified 737 MAX operators at the end of August that in certain landing scenarios, pilots may be unable to use the automatic flight guidance function.
Aviation industry insiders said this could add distractions for flight crews "at the worst possible moment." Boeing Company emphasized that pilots are all trained to land safely under such circumstances, and the company is working with airlines to develop procedures to reactivate the automatic navigation function when necessary. Boeing Company also said engineers are designing a software fix.
