The data showed that the values of Hong Kong's total exports and imports in August both recorded significant year-on-year increases, rising by 53.0% and 60.0% respectively, extending the strong growth momentum in July.
Specifically, following a 50.7% year-on-year increase in July 2026, the value of total merchandise exports in August reached HK$667.9 billion, up 53.0% from the same month in 2025. Meanwhile, following a 41.0% year-on-year increase in July, the value of merchandise imports in August reached HK$739.1 billion, up 60.0% from the same month in 2025. A visible trade deficit of HK$71.2 billion was recorded for the month, equivalent to 9.6% of the value of merchandise imports.
For the first eight months combined, the value of total merchandise exports in 2026 rose 42.5% from the same period in 2025, while the value of merchandise imports rose 43.2%. A visible trade deficit of HK$371.2 billion was recorded for the first eight months, equivalent to 7.2% of the value of merchandise imports.
After seasonal adjustment, comparing the three months ending August 2026 with the preceding three months, the value of total merchandise exports rose 9.1%, while the value of merchandise imports rose 5.1%.
Analysis by country/territory
Comparing August 2026 with the same month in 2025, the value of total exports to Asia rose 59.2%. Within this region, the value of total exports to most major destinations recorded increases, particularly Malaysia (up 101.7%), Vietnam (up 83.3%), Singapore (up 80.8%), Taiwan, China (up 71.7%), Thailand (up 61.7%) and the mainland of China (up 61.2%).
Apart from destinations in Asia, the value of total exports to some major destinations in other regions also recorded increases, particularly Mexico (up 68.8%) and the United States (up 64.2%).
Over the same period, the value of imports from most major suppliers recorded increases, particularly Korea (up 265.8%), the United Kingdom (up 111.6%), India (up 107.7%), Malaysia (up 78.7%), Vietnam (up 67.2%) and the mainland of China (up 54.1%).
Comparing the first eight months with the same period in 2025, the value of total exports to most major destinations recorded increases, particularly Singapore (up 82.4%), Taiwan, China (up 73.2%), the United States (up 63.4%), Thailand (up 56.6%), Vietnam (up 55.1%) and the mainland of China (up 46.7%).
Over the same period, the value of imports from most major suppliers recorded increases, particularly Korea (up 140.7%), India (up 105.9%), the United Kingdom (up 91.0%), Vietnam (up 71.4%), Malaysia (up 49.6%) and the mainland of China (up 44.7%).
Analysis by major commodity category
Comparing August 2026 with the same month in 2025, the value of total exports of some major commodity categories recorded increases, particularly "electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof" (up HK$135.7 billion, up 62.6%) and "office machines and automatic data processing machines" (up HK$60.2 billion, up 131.0%).
Over the same period, the value of imports of most major commodity categories recorded increases, particularly "electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof" (up HK$139.0 billion, up 64.5%), "office machines and automatic data processing machines" (up HK$61.4 billion, up 154.5%) and "telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment" (up HK$29.2 billion, up 50.4%).
Comparing the first eight months with the same period in 2025, the value of total exports of most major commodity categories recorded increases, particularly "electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof" (up HK$818.2 billion, up 50.6%), "office machines and automatic data processing machines" (up HK$237.1 billion, up 51.5%) and "telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment" (up HK$191.0 billion, up 49.2%).
Over the same period, the value of imports of most major commodity categories recorded increases, particularly "electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical parts thereof" (up HK$800.3 billion, up 49.3%), "telecommunications and sound recording and reproducing apparatus and equipment" (up HK$248.3 billion, up 60.6%) and "office machines and automatic data processing machines" (up HK$170.6 billion, up 44.1%).
